Description

Journey to Kenya in 360° virtual reality, where the futures of wildlife and people are intertwined. “My Africa” transports you to stand in the midst of a thundering wildebeest migration, witness a lioness snatch her prey, go nose-to-trunk with an inquisitive baby elephant – and meet a community dedicated to saving Africa’s wildlife. The interactive companion piece, “My Africa: Elephant Keeper,” is a groundbreaking live-action experience that puts you in the shoes of a keeper at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary caring for the newest arrival, a “baby elephant” named Dudu.

“My Africa” is narrated by Academy Award-winning and Kenyan-raised actress Lupita Nyong'o and follows the story of a young Samburu woman named Naltwasha Leripe. You see this remote corner of Kenya through her eyes. Whether tending daily livestock, digging “singing” wells deep into dry riverbanks or rescuing a young elephant orphaned by a poacher’s gun, Naltwasha reveals a world where conservation efforts by the local community result in improved livelihoods, healthcare, and more educational opportunity, while also decreasing conflict.

The “My Africa: Elephant Keeper” companion piece places alongside the baby elephant who lost her mother to poachers and has just arrived at the sanctuary. Dudu is sedated, but very much alive, and it’s up to you to do the important work to nurse her back to health. You must follow a series of tasks in the correct order, checking them off the whiteboard as you go. Use the tools in your surroundings to help. Only once you have cooled her down, checked the heart rate, taken a blood sample and fed her milk will she will begin to wake up and be ready to rejoin the other orphaned elephants.

Executive produced by Conservation International and produced and directed by four-time Emmy winner David Allen of Passion Planet, with support from filmmakers at Vision3, much of the project was captured with virtual reality cameras in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of northern Kenya at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, the first elephant orphanage in Africa owned and operated by the local community. In a region where conservation has traditionally been pursued by wealthy outsiders, Reteti and the surrounding Northern Rangelands Trust offer a different model — one grounded in local leadership and traditional knowledge. This project was made possible by The Tiffany & Co. Foundation, with distribution support from glassybaby.

Community-driven conservation is Africa’s best hope to ensure a brighter future for elephants and people alike.

Your purchase of “My Africa” and “My Africa: Elephant Keeper” goes to support Conservation International’s important work to protect elephants, other wildlife and their habitats, all around the world. Everything we do to protect nature depends on supporters like you.
